Four Months

Our 4-month appt was actually two weeks ago, but I am a bit behind on blogging. Elsie was 12#10 and Tilly 14#. The past few days we have been struggling with big decisions, such as do we let them CIO? How about gradual extinction? Should they get helmets for 8 weeks?

The girls have been hitting lots of milestones. Tilly was able to grab things and put them in her mouth and laugh about 2 weeks before Elsie could. Now that they're both able to it's lots of fun. Yesterday I caught Tilly stealing a pacifier that was falling out of E's mouth, and she put it in her own mouth. I sense this will cause unhappiness in the future. Elsie is super strong and she can sit (!!!!) tripod style for up to a minute. She also likes to stand on her feet while we hold her arms. I suspect she will be standing on her own while holding onto a coffee table in the next month. She can also roll belly to back, no longer by accident. Tilly lacks these gross motor skills and she is really floppy but this also means she is a great hugger when you carry her. She is also the better behaved/less gassy child.

Ferber, Weissbluth, Pantley, Cohen....America is obsessed with sleep training at an early age so that parents can go back to work full time when the babies are 3 months old. We realized that we had an eating problem, not a sleeping problem. The babies only wake up because they are hungry, and they are hungry at night because they grazed throughout the day. Instead of feeding them 0.5-2oz q1h prn, we are getting them on a schedule of 4+oz q3-4h. This has been working quite well. Bedtime is 8pm, dream feed 10:30-11am, and ideally they wake up 6-7am. This worked last night but it was an isolated event so I'm not confident/foolish enough to go bragging yet.
